Simple Machine Forums & Nvu

Simple Machine Forums

Simple Machine Forums is message board building software similar to PHPBB and vBulletin. It requires web space that’s compatible with PHP and MySQL. You simply upload the .zip of the file onto your web space, and open the install.php file.

For a host, I suggest www.unlimitedmb.com. I recently used that host and this software to redo the message board for my website, Gamers of Maine.

Nvu WYSIWYG HTML Editor

Nvu, pronounced N-view, is a “WYSIWYG” or “What You See Is What You Get” HTML editor. It’s a good tool for amateur and professional web designers. From easy table design to source editing this program creates easy to maneuver web pages. Just save what you design on Nvu and upload it onto some blank web space. Almost any host works, and when testing it I used Freewebs just because I’ve used it before and you can create as many websites as you want. Check out this web page for an example of this program.

Hopefully this helps you guys! Comment with your testimonial if you’d like.

Download YouTube Videos

The YouTube logo

This script by Takashi Ohida is conveniently web-based, unlike most of it’s kind. What does it do? It allows you to download videos off of YouTube.com. Since the beginning of YouTube, people have tried to do this by viewing the source of the page in a notepad, and looking for the direct link. Unfortunately, it’s very difficult to do this.

After a while, people started making programs like this. Although this could be used for piracy, a good amount of the things on YouTube don’t have an American license (such as subbed anime that’s exclusive to Japan). This tool is extremely valuable in my opinion – especially when you don’t have to download a program to use it.

First Post on a New Blog

It’s been a while since I took to blogging, but now that summer’s here I have plenty of spare time. I decided my new blog would be about computers, and my life in general, although basically the two are synonyms.

I’ll talk about my favorite software, and program plug-ins. Perhaps I’ll feature interesting gadgets and hardware. I’ll also link people to my deviantART submissions when I feel the need to.

In an hour at the most, I should make my first real post.

Enjoy my blog,
Mike
